    Abstract: This study is a fundamental investigation of physical properties of bentonite, one of the most promising candidates for use as buffer material in the geological disposal systems of radioactive waste. For the simplification of study and the scheme to coordinate with a series of research in buffer materials, the MX-80 bentonite was selected to analyze its physical properties, including water content, specific gravity, particle size, liquid limit, plastic limit, shrinkage limit, one-dimensional consolidation, and unconfined compressive strength under the environment of deionized water and artificial seawater. The purpose of this study is to offer useful reference data to the design of a waste repository with buffer material
