    Abstract: The authors propose a novel self-initiated iterative optimum weighted least-squares (WLS) approximation method for the design of linear phase FIR (finite impulse response) digital filters. The designed optimum filters have nearly equiripple approximation error in every frequency band which is smaller than that of the Parks-McClellan optimum equiripple linear phase FIR filters with the same filter length. This fact is supported by two design examples. The proposed design method is also applicable to the design of arbitrary linear phase FIR filters with some minor modifications
