    Abstract: The estimate by Kalnajs of 0.8-1.5×108 yr for the time of ‘damping’ of spiral density waves by their induced shocks in the interstellar gas conveys an important qualitative concept. However, part of his discussion is in error inasmuch as it is based on invalid considerations of energy transfer. This letter gives a correct derivation of the dissipative effects of galactic shocks based on the application of Bernoulli’s theorem to the problem of the angular momentum interaction. In an approximation which ignores the effects of the convective transport and of the interactions with the basic state, we estimate a value for the ‘damping time’, ~10 9 yr, which is comparable to the ‘propagation time’ for a group of spiral waves.
